Folk Dancing!

Yesterday, Val and I decided to go check out a folk dance class at JHU. It sounded quite shady when we had looked on the JHU campus site. The add, said to knock on the door when we arrived at the basement of the building. So both of us went there and guess what we found - We saw three senior citizens all very cheerful and gleefully looking at us and welcoming us very warmly inside. I could not help grinning.

So the teacher, I think his name was Albert says, "Are you ladies ready to folk dance". We both look at each other and smile and say "yes". I know that moment spoke volumes when we looked at each other. I had totally expected it to be a bunch of young people holding some sort of a strange dance club. But i was delighted and amused it was in fact a club of senior citizens holding this club.

So we started off learning a Israeli folk dance, which I am guess is some sort of a religious dance which had a lot of twists and turns. Highly amusing, since I was not sure which way to turn though, that was the best dance from all the ones we danced that I figured out.

Once Val told them she was from Bulgaria we landed up dancing a lot to Bulgarian tunes. Those were throughly confusing coz they were very similar. I lost count of how many Bulgarian dances we danced. I think then we learnt Macedonian, Armenian and Yugoslavian dances quickly one after the other. So if you ask me what the differences between all of them were I will not be able to answer that question. sigh!

But on whole I had a fun evening and broke some sweat dancing to some of the folk dances from around the world. I left the dance studio giggling and laughing throughly reinvigorated.
